Detailed Shop Drawing Creation
Published: July 26, 2025 | Category: BIM, Construction Technology
Following the completion of the BIM Coordination process, we will assist in generating individual shop drawings tailored to each trade’s specifications. These drawings will be the outcome of the collaborative coordination efforts among trades and will be submitted for engineering approval and subsequent fabrication.
Our Shop Drawing process involves the following step:
The 11 Key Steps of the Shop Drawing Creation
1. Understand the Requirements
Review the contract documents, specifications, and project plans to understand the requirements for shop drawings. These documents will outline what needs to be included in the shop drawings, such as dimensions, materials, and installation details.
2. Identify Responsible Parties
Determine which subcontractors or suppliers are responsible for preparing the shop drawings for the specific components or materials in question. This may include structural steel, HVAC systems, electrical systems, plumbing, and more.
3. Gather Necessary Information
Collect all relevant information needed to create accurate shop drawings. This may include design drawings, specifications, manufacturer’s information, and any site-specific requirements or conditions.
4. Create the Shop Drawings
Utilize drafting software or CAD (Computer-Aided Design) programs to create detailed shop drawings. Ensure that the drawings adhere to industry standards and project-specific requirements. Include all necessary information, such as dimensions, materials, fabrication methods, installation instructions, and any deviations from the contract documents.
5. Review and Verify Accuracy
Thoroughly review the shop drawings for accuracy and completeness. Verify that they align with the design intent and project specifications. Check all dimensions, tolerances, and any applicable building codes or regulations.
6. Seek Internal Approval
Before submitting the shop drawings to the general contractor or architect/engineer, ensure that they are reviewed and approved internally by your team. This step helps catch any errors or discrepancies.
7. Submit the Shop Drawings
Prepare a formal submission package that includes the shop drawings and any supporting documents, such as material samples or test reports.
Submit the package to the general contractor, architect, or engineer as required by the project contract. This may involve sending physical copies or electronic files, depending on project preferences.
8. Address Review Comments
Be prepared to address any comments or requests for revisions from the general contractor or design team promptly. Revise the shop drawings as necessary to address their concerns.
9. Obtain Approval
Once the shop drawings meet the approval of the relevant parties, obtain written approval or signatures as required by the project contract. This approval signifies that the drawings can be used as a reference for construction.
10. Distribute Approved Shop Drawings
Distribute copies of the approved shop drawings to all relevant parties, including subcontractors, suppliers, and site personnel, as applicable. Ensure that everyone has access to the approved drawings for reference during construction.
11. Maintain Records
Keep copies of all approved shop drawings and related correspondence for your records. They may be required for reference, inspections, or future documentation.
